Life was a beach in Belfast yesterday for one day only and – in true Northern Ireland fashion – the rain ensured there were more overcoats than speedos.
The initiative involved a stretch of sand created in the grounds of City Hall for a beach party thrown by Lord Mayor Nichola Mallon.
Families were invited to enjoy the free buckets and spades, samba music, street entertainment and a barbecue.
Despite smaller than expected crowds, the Lord Mayor said it was important to open up the City Hall for both locals and visitors from abroad.
“City Hall belongs to the people of Belfast and yet for many people it is seen as remote from their daily lives.
“I want City Hall to be at the heart of Belfast – open, accessible and welcoming for everyone including our many visitors from outside the city.”
Cllr Mallon added: “It is also a great way to draw more people into the city so the surrounding area will benefit also. I am enjoying myself and it certainly looks like everyone else is too.”
