VIDEO: Mourne Young Defenders in practice

MOURNE Young Defenders proved they are in 'fine tune' ahead of the biggest day in Ulster's marching season.

Formed in 1976 and representing the market town of Kilkeel, the flute band presently has approximately 70 members.

Mixing a blend of youth and experience, band members allowed the News Letter website access to their weekly practice.

Band chairman George Ballance explains such is the reputation of the Young Defenders that some members travel from as far away as Belfast and Carrickfergus to fulfil their duties.

Mr Ballance also refers to the special 'Kilkeel Twelfth night' when thousands throng the streets to watch the band parade their home town to culminate a long day's marching.

As well as representing County Down with great distinction, Mourne Young Defenders hace travelled as far afield as Canada and participated in the Lord Mayor's Show in London, showcasing their musical talent.
