Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers has reportedly said that she believes the UK will remain part of the EU.

Sky News’ official Twitter feed reported her as saying that “her instinct is ‘Remain’ will win & it would be down to ‘Project Fear’ succeeding”.

A YouGov poll released at 10pm suggested Remain was at 52 per cent and Leave on 48 per cent.

Shortly after 10pm, when the polls closed, Sky News also reported Ukip’s Nigel Farage as saying it “looks like Remain will edge it”.

Meanwhile Boris Johnson – one of the other leading lights in the anti-EU campaign – wrote on Twitter: “Boris Johnson has tweeted for the first time since the 10pm deadline passed, writing: “The polls have now closed, democracy has been served + we await the verdict of the people. Thanks to everyone involved + everyone who voted.”
