DUP has let SF off the hook previously

In fairness to Sammy Wilson, I think you should have warned him that his comment column would be sharing a page with Walter Millar's letter (August 22).

Had you done so, Sammy could have found another topic which would have avoided the major embarrassment which he now no doubt suffers.

Whilst Sammy calls for Sinn Fein not to be let off the hook, Walter Millar summarises the countless occasions when the DUP paper tiger has done just that. Given another week or two, we will no doubt see the two largest parties holding hands again as though nothing had ever happened.

On Radio Ulster last week, Mr Wilson stated that the DUP would not be pulling the plug on mandatory coalition as the electorate had given his party a mandate to stick with it. In making that statement, Sinn Fein were effectively given a free run to behave as they wish, knowing that the only consequence of being caught out would be a few days’ adverse publicity.

Sammy knows very well that the mandate which his party got was based on the mistaken understanding that Republicans had committed to fully democratic politics.

As it is, we have a coalition within which there are those who, inter alia, refuse to tell what they know of past atrocities, refuse to work for the disbandment of the Provisional IRA and are engaged in a daily process of chipping away at our British heritage. No unionist voted for this farce.
