Gunpowder script lacked balance

The recent BBC TV series, Gunpowder, written by the Northern Ireland man Ronan Bennett, portrayed Protestants as the villains and the Catholics as the persecuted.

The central objective in this historical event was the killing of a king, because he was a Protestant.

The gruesome killings portrayed in the drama are a mirror image of what Protestants suffered when Queen Mary (‘bloody Mary’) persecuted Protestants, 1553 to 1558.

You have to question the motives of the BBC in screening this in October, the very month we Protestants were celebrating the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther.

The BBC have purposely portrayed the main Protestant characters as being unattractive in manner and appearance, whereas the Catholic leader of ‘the plot’ is presented in a positive manner.

Ronan Bennett’s script lacks the balance required for such a production.
