Zoe urges Ulster to have a laugh
ZOE Salmon is encouraging Northern Ireland to have a laugh over the coming weeks – and it's all for a good cause.
The Dancing on Ice star was back home in Ulster yesterday to promote Comic Relief and visited a project in Lisburn which is funded by the charity.
With Red Nose Day exactly one month away, Bangor-born Zoe was urging the Province to exercise its funny bone.
"It's all about doing something funny for money this year," Zoe said, "so I want the people of Northern Ireland to be creative and have a laugh."
Given our unique Ulster sense of humour, the 29-year-old star is setting the bar high when it comes to amusing antics from local people.
"I'm expecting really creative things from here – the stranger the better," she said.
"Sitting in a bathtub full of baked of baked beans is funny, but it's been done.
"We want to hear about the unusual things you could get into a bathtub with, or even the unusual people," she joked.
Zoe, who has confessed that Catherine Tate is her favourite comedian, admits to often finding humour in the most inappropriate moments.
"Sometimes I laugh when I really shouldn't, like when people fall over during rehearsals for Dancing On Ice," she said.
"It's my first reaction to burst out laughing. I laugh even when I'm the one falling."
Yesterday she visited Voluntary Service Lisburn – a Comic Relief-funded project that trains volunteers and offers work placements.
One of the projects it runs is a furniture recycling scheme to give long-term unemployed work skills and experience and provide cheap furniture to families in the area.
"It was really interesting to see a scheme like this first-hand," said Zoe.
Since it was founded in 1985, Comic Relief has made 414 grants totalling 8 million to organisations in the Province.
The charity divides the money it raises between projects in the UK and Africa.
"Just a fiver can save someone's life – 5 will buy a mosquito net for a family in Africa which can help prevent malaria," Zoe said.
"I know things are tough at the minute but we're appealing to people to give what they can because it can make a real difference."
