THE band of the Royal Irish Regiment struck a musical chord at the weekend as part of a special charity concert.
The sound of a combination of flute, brass, pipe and percussion instruments filled the air of the Spectrum Centre on the Shankill Road as the RIR band, featuring TA soldiers, raised money for the Army Benevolent Fund.

The high standard of music provided by the RIR has been illustrated in recent weeks as the band led homecoming parades involving soldiers who had recently returned to the Province following stints in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Hundreds of spectators - including Belfast High Sheriff Margaret McKenzie, DUP MP Nigel Dodds and fellow soldiers - enjoyed a high standard of musical selections as the band played collectively and individuals performed solo acts on Friday evening.

The biggest cheer of the night came when as a finale, the band played the regimental march of the Royal Irish Regiment - Killaloe.

The Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) provides support to serving soldiers, former soldiers and their families in times of need.

The soldiers' charity assists those with disabilities or mental illness, people experiencing homelessness or unemployment, and older people.
