Nostalgia 1935: PM impressed by debating skills of young farmers

THERE was a high level of debate when the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster met for their inter-club debating competition.

Held in the Physics Lecture Theatre at Queen’s University, seven teams took part - with the Rathmore Club coming out on top and Millisle taking the runners up spot.

Presenting the prizes, the Northern Ireland Prime Minister, Viscount Craigavon, said that he could visualise the Northern Parliament being filled in years to come with most intelligent representatives of the farming community.

The subject for the debate had been: ‘That a quota system for Empire and foreign produce would be more beneficial to the home farmer than Empire free trade.’
