GUNS around the world boomed in salute to Queen Elizabeth II as the Commonwealth joined Britain in proclaiming her accession to the throne.
In Australia, Asia and Africa, public squares were packed while governors and other dignitaries read the proclamation.
For instance, in Canberra, crowds stood in the drizzling rain to hear the official announcement, while in New Dehli, a 21-gun salute was fired and, even though a Republic, reported the News Letter, India had gone into full mourning for the King.
