Cowen becomes Irish premier
BRIAN Cowen has formally succeeded Bertie Ahern as the new taoiseach.
The former finance minister was nominated in the Irish Parliament by his predecessor.
Mr Ahern described the new taoiseach as a "uniquely well qualified candidate".
Mr Cowen's first formal engagement in his new role will be his attendance at the US investment conference in Belfast, alongside his UK counterpart, Gordon Brown.
Mr Ahern - who served as Irish premier for 11 years - stepped down last month amid pressure regarding his personal finances.
