We aim to cut tax, say Tories

TAX cuts will be the ultimate goal of the next Tory government, despite the economic crisis, the Northern Ireland branch of the Conservatives insisted yesterday.
A reduction in the headline rate of corporation tax, a fair fuel stabiliser and the abolition of stamp duty for first-time buyers – on properties up to £250,000 – “are the cornerstones of the Conservatives’ taxation plans”, said Jeffrey Peel, of the local Tories.
At last week’s Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham, David Cameron pledged tax cuts but stressed this could only happen when it was economically viable for the country – given that a long-term recession may now be upon the UK.
Mr Peel said: “We firmly believe that, as a nation, we are overtaxed. The current Government has played fast and loose with people’s finances, leaving us with one of the most complicated tax codes in the western world.
“This situation simply cannot go on.”
