All-rounder Davy McKee has decided that he wants another crack at the reinstated Portrush Supermoto on Friday afternoon.
McKee is the defending Ulster champion but he hasn’t been on a Supermoto bike since last November.

“Racing on the day before the North-West 200 has a special appeal,” admitted McKee who will be on board a world championship winning machine.

Acc
ording to Colin McKee, Davy’s manager and brother; “We have secured a 640 cc KTM on which the German rider Bernard Hemier won the world title a few years ago.

“It promises to be a fast bike and I would think that Davy will be able to put the power to the best possible use at the Lansdowne car park track.

“In recent weeks Davy has been doing some short circuit racing in the 125 class and he has been a motocross winner as well. One thing is for sure, he’s not race rusty.”

Friday’s event is billed as a demonstration occasion but in reality it is going to be a proper race meeting restricted to solo competitors.

“They will be divided into three grades,” explained Mark Banks on behalf of the organising Supermoto NI Club.

“Each group will have at least three races. Naturally McKee will be in the premier class where he will be joined by the likes of Alan Morgan, Ivan Kerr and Justin Carey.

“Practice begins at 12 noon and hopefully the real action will be underway by two o’clock.”

Looking further ahead there are Ulster championship rounds at Aghadowey on May 24 and June 7.

The David Jefferies memorial event is the responsibility of the Temple club at the end of June when McKee is likely to be tempted out in an effort to retain the silverware.

Followers of the sport and competitors will be delighted to learn that the original Nutt’s Corner track will see a return of Supermoto in June and August for a summer series.

Just published is the Spring edition of Ulster Road Racing in focus which is a timely North-West 200 special.

This is a labour of love for editor Eddie Mateer who includes an interesting article by Cathal Kelly on Riders for Health.

Turning back the clock to the 1950s is Barry Sewell with the Kneeler Norton and Ray Amm, the gritty little Rhodesian.

Photo-journalist Alastair McCook recalls his passion for the sport, his books and his future plans. As the title suggests this publication is packed with pictures including a Martin Finnegan tribute page.
