PEGASUS showed their class at European level again yesterday when they beat the Polish champions Brzeziny 2-1.
It was a performance of real character by the All Ireland champions and if they win their final game on Sunday they will get promotion to the ‘A’ Division of the European League.

The Polish team packed their defence making it difficult for Pegasus
to score even though they had more possession.

There was no score in the first half and then the tournament descended into a farce for a time when the local water supply failed to work and officials were unable to spray the pitch at half time. Eventually the Fire Service were called in to hose the very dry pitch and the second half began 80 minutes late.

It was a very frustrating time for the players as they sat waiting for the re-start in their dug-outs but Pegasus responded with a superb performance of gutsy hockey in the second half.

Nadine Brown at right back was in terrific form and Claire McMahon constantly created problems up front. Ten minutes into the half captain Arlene Boyles lashed a penalty corner shot against the backboards giving her side the lead. With only ten minutes to go a momentary lapse in the normally tight Pegasus defence gave Brzeziny a chance and they equalised through Orlowska Agata.

Many teams would have allowed their heads to go down but Pegasus are too good to give up easily.

Kate McConnell broke through on the right. She crashed the ball into the circle, it cannoned off a defender’s foot and Kirsty McCollum pounced on the rebound to slam in the winner.

It was a wonderful performance by Pegasus with Boyles and Jill Orbinson using all their experience to mastermind victory from the back.
