Alpha pair warm up for European Championships with impressive display in Croatia

Sinead Chambers and Caroline Black will be looking forward to competing in the European Championships later this month

Sinead Chambers and Caroline Black warmed up for the European Championships in Russia later this month by reaching the quarter-finals of the Croatia Open.

They got off to the start they wanted by beating Sonja Langthaler and Nina Sorger (Austria) 21-12 22-24 21-14 only to be confronted by the top seeded pair from Turkey Ozge Bayrak and Neslihan Yigit b and made an early exit 21-11 21-14.

Their Alpha colleagues Keady Smith and Alannah Stephenson had an even more difficult opening round when they went out 21-13 21-10 to a pair from Denmark Iben Bergstein and Louise Seiersen who went on to lose the final 21-19 in the third set.

Sinead, who has formed a formidable mixed doubles partnership with her brother Ciaran, reached the quarter-final of the mixed doubles beating their Ulster colleagues Ryan Stewart and Keady Smith 18-21 21-16 21-19 in their opening match only to go out to the unseeded pair from Turkey Ramazan Ozturk and Neslihan Kilic 21-10 21-17 while Stuart Lightbody and Caroline Black’s competition was ended by the No2 seeds Jones Rafli Jansen and Cisita Joity Jansen 21-12 21-13
