Balmer and McGrory lead from the front

JULIE Balmer and Stephen McGrory had the best overall rankings after the eight rounds of the Up And Running Championship Ireland Half Marathon Series. The figures which have just been issued followed the competitions at: Larne, Omagh, Newry, Lisburn, Ards, Dervock, Cookstown and the Waterside.

Julie Balmer won the F35 group from Geraldine Quigley and Diane Watson. She finished second in the first five rounds before starting the winning habit at Dervock.

Roisin Hughes won the Open group easily with Joanne Curran taking F40 and Patricia Campbell winning the F45 from Linda Petticrew. Patricia Brown led the F50s with Mary Mackin and Brigid Quinn heading the F55s.

Annadale strider Stephen McGrory had a very consistent season. He won the M40 ahead of Thomas Leitch. Dennis Scott took the Open from Turlough Donnelly, Andrew Considine and Chris Denton led the M35s with John Hughes and Nigel Grier winning M45 and M50. Jim Breen and Hugh Boyle were best in the M55s.

The top three in each section in the very popular series received £200, £100 and £50. An astonishing 23 competitors completed all eight races.
