Belfast Giants face tough test against Sheffield Steelers in Elite League

IN FORM: Belfast Giants Kevin Saurette

IN FORM: Belfast Giants Kevin Saurette

  • by Nigel Ringland

The Giants know the importance of Saturday night’s Elite League game against the Sheffield Steelers.

The Odyssey side know they can keep pace with the Nottingham Panthers at the top of the Elite League, only two points separate the sides, while they could open up a nine point gap to the third placed Steelers.

And with 22 games remaining that would essentially make the title chase a two-horse race, so for the visitors Saturday evening’s match-up has extra significance.

And Giants coach Doug Christiansen knows how intense Saturday night’s match will be.

“Sheffield will be desperate but we’ll be desperate also.

“These are two very good teams, two of the top three teams in the league and players who when they signed for both teams expected to be fighting for a league title and both sides still think that is very much a possibility.

“This should be a heck of a hockey game.

“They’re a physical team and they’re going to come after us and crash bodies as well as any team in the league and we need to withstand some of that but we also have to give it back.

“It’s important for both teams to get a result and that’s the beauty of the business end of the hockey season.”
