Belfast Giants sign netminder Garrett Zemlak

New Belfast Giants signing Gardett Zemlak

New Belfast Giants signing Gardett Zemlak

The Belfast Giants have drafted in netminder Garrett Zemlak to replace Stephen Murphy, who has been ruled out indefinitely through injury.

Murphy suffered a groin injury during the Giants victory over Coventry, with defenceman Sam Roberts also out of action after breaking his collarbone in the same game.

Canadian Zemlak (23) played for the Fife Flyers in 2011/12 before joining Braehead Clan in 2012, but was released from his contract as the team failed to shine.

Giants general manager, Todd Kelman, said he was relieved Zemlak had been swiftly secured as a replacement for Murphy, therefore avoiding a potentially “disastrous” scenario.

“We have been hit hard with injuries as of late, and losing Murphy could have been disastrous, but we are happy that we were able to agree to terms with Garrett before he headed back to North America,” he said,

“He had a few options in leagues over there but he wanted the opportunity here in Belfast and is looking forward to making his debut on Wednesday night [against Fife Flyers].”

The Giants are six points behind Elite League leaders Nottingham Panthers.
