Belfast Giants still in Elite League title race after beating Dundee Stars

ON TARGET: Belfast Giants Kevin Saurette

ON TARGET: Belfast Giants Kevin Saurette

  • by Nigel Ringland

The Belfast Giants put all the off ice troubles behind them last night as they shutout the Dundee Stars 2-0 to record a huge win in the chase of the Elite League title.

Playing their first game under the new ownership of the Odyssey Trust the Giants played solidly at a tricky venue to get a victory and with the two points leapfrogged over the Sheffield Steelers and back into second place just two points behind the Nottingham Panthers but having played a game more.

There were only five minor penalties called in last night’s game and the Giants took advantage of their first powerplay when Craig Peacock and Robby Sandrock assisted on Kevin Saurette’s ninth goal of the season at 3:04.

Despite dominating in the shot total, eventually outshooting the Stars 40-23, it took until the third period for the Giants to double their lead.

At 54:24 Jeff Mason struck to make it 2-0 but with an assist on the goal Colin Shields became the all-time leading scorer for the Giants moving ahead of George Awada.

There was no comeback for the Stars as Giants netminder Garrett Zemlak recorded the shutout.

It’s a big few days in the championships chase and on Friday the Giants can sit at home and watch Sheffield and Nottingham battle it out ahead of their home clash with Sheffield at the Odyssey Arena on Saturday night.

At the same time Nottingham travel to Braehead and on Sunday the Giants face a tough trip to Cardiff while Sheffield make the journey to Dundee. There is loads still to play for.
