Belfast trio aiming to halt losing trend

John McCullough

John McCullough

Ireland’s Stephen Gibson, John McCullough and Michael Merritt will be hoping it’s third time lucky in next week’s British Isles Indoor Bowls Championships in Stanley.

The Belfast boys wrote themselves into the record books back in January by becoming the first combination to win the Irish triples title three years on the bounce.

After that unprecidented success, the Shaw’s Bridge representatives will be looking to break their duck at British level.

Two years ago, they agonisingly lost out (13-12) in a thrilling semi final contest against Scotland’s Craig Paterson, Craig Moss and Paul O’Donnell.

Then last season, it was a case of de ja vu for Gibson, McCullough and Merritt as they were pipped (15-13) by Lloyd Roberts, John Evans and Griff Sanders, of England, in a preliminary round.

The Irish triple have avoided the prelim round this time and await the winner of the game between Neil Taylor, Geoff Simmons and Ross Tomlinson, of Wales, and John Keat, Geoff Savident and Matt Le Ber (Channel Islands).

The tournament runs from Monday-Wednesday, March 11-13.
