Barry McGuigan will walk into Friday’s weigh-in believing that Carl Frampton will reign supreme in New York on Saturday night.

The Belfast fighter faces the biggest challenge of his professional career as he challenges three weight World Champion Leo Santa Cruz for the unbeaten Mexican’s WBA Featherweight title.

It is a huge fight for the Tigers Bay man as he looks to emulate his manager McGuigan in getting his hands on the WBA featherweight belt.

The Clones Cyclone has long been championing his fighter’s cause and he is sure Frampton will deliver in the red-hot atmosphere of the Barclays Center.

“Yes, I’ve always believed that. I have said it from the get-go and people thought I was exaggerating. I always believed Carl has the potential to be exceptional. And so now we have a fight that will provide us with all of that,” said McGuigan.

“Let’s not for one minute underestimate Santa Cruz - he’s an exceptional fighter. I believe he will push Carl harder than he’s ever been pushed before.”

The bookmakers have Santa Cruz as favourite for the clash and some believe he will have too much in his locker for Frampton, but McGuigan is sure ‘The Jackal’ will come out fighting and prove the bookies and the doubters wrong.

“I believe that will really bring the best out of Frampton and we will see the very best Carl Frampton.

“And we’ll have to see the very best Carl Frampton to beat Santa Cruz convincingly, but that’s what I believe will happen,” he added.

McGuigan said he relishes being involved at the top end of professional boxing.

“I love it because ultimately from the inside out, I’m a fighter. But people are talking about sentimentality -me winning the WBA title -and all that nonsense. We just don’t go for that.

“Particularly Frampton, he doesn’t do any of that sort of nonsense,” said McGuigan.

“This is another fight and the build-up has been to be in the best shape that he can be in, use the right tactics, that Shane and him have worked on very hard, and to win the fight.

“So forget about the sentimentality, forget about it being the WBA title; it’s just we have got to go out there and perform.

“And win and win in style and that is what he will do,” he added.
