Former IBF World champion Dave ‘Boy’ McAuley believes Leo Santa Cruz has made a ‘terrible mistake in wanting a rematch with Carl Frampton.
WBA World champion Frampton confirmed yesterday that he and Santa Cruz will once again trade leather in the coming months.
‘The Jackal’ out-pointed Santa Cruz in New York at the end of July to take the Mexican’s WBA belt from him and now Santa Cruz has been given the chance to claim his title back.
And McAuley believes Santa Cruz has made a ‘terrible mistake.’
“They were crazy to take the first fight and I believe they are making a terrible mistake in signing up for a rematch.
“If I had been Santa Cruz and they had suggested that I fight Frampton, I would have said ‘no-way, are you crazy?’
“And they are now compounding their error by taking the fight again.
“I see Carl winning easier this time and stopping him in the later rounds,” added McAuley.
And McAuley believes there will be demons inside Santa Cruz’s head before he faces Frampton again.
“He will be thinking to himself - ‘Frampton can hurt me and my punches seem to have no effect on him.
“Frampton has a good chin. He can box, he can fight and he hits very hard.
“All these things will be going through his head and he also lost the first fight and he will know that Frampton is just better than him.
“His confidence will also have taken a battering as well.
“He was an unbeaten three weight World champion and then Frampton arrives and takes his title,” he added.
And McAuley says Santa Cruz will be wary of Frampton’s power.
“I was ringside for some of Carl’s fights and I saw and heard the shots.
“He is a powerful boy and he can hit very hard. Santa Cruz will know that and he will be very, very wary.
“When a guy with Carl’s power even punches you on the arms, you say to yourself - ‘I don’t fancy that.’
“They were crazy to take the fight in the first place and if they were my team I would have sacked the lot of them.”
