Carl Frampton will not make same mistakes he made in El Paso

Frampton made the long trip to New York on Monday to face unbeaten Santa Cruz and he knows he can have no repeat of his performance against Alejandro Gonzalez Jr in El Paso last year, when he hit the canvas twice in the first round before recovering to win on points.

‘The Jackal’ - who will be based in the US for the last weeks of his preparation - knows he has to do better this time round.

“I need to show the American crowd what I’m capable of.

“I’m better than that, I’m a better fighter than I looked in the first round when Gonzalez put me down twice.

“It was disastrous but I came back and boxed quite well after that and won on points comfortably.

“That was me at 70 percent and I really need to be at my best to beat Santa Cruz because he’s the best fighter I’ve come up against.

“There was a wee bit of a relaxed atmosphere before I fought Gonzalez.

“I thought it was going to be easy, the heat wasn’t great either and I boxed in the afternoon, so there was less time to recover from making the weight.

“But I’ve learned from those mistakes,” he said to ESPN.

And Frampton is looking forward to putting things right at the Barclays Center and says that they have learned from his under-par performance in El Paso.

“I’m boxing on the east coast this time so it will be different and I was only out for eight days before the last fight, but I’m going out sooner for this one.

“I felt like I was constantly dehydrated and I kept gorging on water.

“Things were wrong but this time we will be out for weeks before and I’m going into the fight as the underdog.”

And Josh Warrington hopes to be dragged into a war so he can prove he as power when he defends his WBC International Featherweight title against Patrick Hyland at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on July 30.

“Patrick has respect for me and I’ve got a lot of respect for him. He’s boxed for the World title earlier in the year so he’s been in with the very best and I know that this is a tough examination for me.

“I had to box clever in the last few fights, but I think this one will be toe-to-toe. Patrick doesn’t take a backwards step in his fights and I think that I’ll be able to show on July 30 that I can really dig and I think it’s going to be a great main event and one that I’ll shine in.

“This is a great show – it’s the best we’ve done so far in Leeds. The fans have put their hands in their pockets time and time again to come and see me and I think we’re delivering a brilliant card for them – the card oozes talent from top to bottom and it’s going to be a great night.”

Hyland is looking to bounce back from his second World title loss with a big win over Warrington, and he is excited to sample the raucous atmosphere that a night of top class boxing in Leeds offers.

“I’ve got a lot of fans coming over and the atmosphere is going to be electric,” said Hyland. “I’ve seen a lot of Josh’s fights and the noise is deafening so I can’t wait to be part of it.

“Gary Russell Jr is the best in the division. He is so, so fast and speed kills in this sport, but this is a different fight. I like how Josh fights and I’ve wanted to get in there with him to test him out and try to take that future World title shot that he’s looking at for myself.”
