Tommy McCarthy is going places insists Pat Magee

Pat Magee is convinced his young charge Tommy McCarthy will go a long way in the cruiserweight division.

Manager Magee was in attendance on Saturday night when McCarthy put on a very impressive performance as he saw off Jon-Lewis Dickinson on points in a British title eliminator in Glasgow.

The most impressive thing was that McCarthy cruised to victory against a former British champion after having Dickinson in all sorts of trouble in the sixth round.

It was an accomplished and mature performance from McCarthy - in only his ninth fight as a professional - and Magee says there is more to come from his fighter.

“It was a great performance from Tommy against an experienced fighter who is a Lonsdale belt holder.

“Tommy had him all over the place in the sixth round but it was good for him to get the ten rounds in.

“We believe he is already at British title level and we will be looking to make that fight after another couple of fights.

“And after that we can take him up to European level. These are exciting times.”

And Magee believes that the input of trainer Brian Magee - a former World champion - could be witnessed on Saturday night.

“You could see that Tommy was more relaxed and he is taking more time with his work. Brian has taught him that once you move up the levels you don’t just knock boys over.

“And physically he is in fantastic shape. We just want to keep him busy and move him along.

“There is no point in him knocking guys over in the first round. Eddie Hearn is talking about bringing a Matchroom show to Belfast in September and we would like Tommy to be on that one,” he added.
