Dave ‘Boy’ McAuley rates Carl Frampton’s chances of claiming world title

Carl Frampton exchanges blows with Kiko Martinez

Carl Frampton exchanges blows with Kiko Martinez

  • by Nicky Fullerton

Dave ‘Boy’ McAuley liked what he saw on Saturday night as Carl Frampton claimed the European title in front of a massed crowd at the Odyssey.

The Tigers Bay Super-bantamweight was in fine form as he stopped Spain’s Kiko Martinez in the ninth round of this tussle.

And former World champion McAuley says ‘The Jackal’ put on a polished performance.

“He was clinical, he was polished and it was a perfect performance as far as I could see.

“He fought off the back foot very well and he broke Martinez down before taking him out in the ninth.

“It was a great display from Frampton and he is going to the top of the world.

“He has the world at his feet and that was a near perfect performance on Saturday night.

“He made Martinez look average and that was a great shot to get him out of there, but he had beat him up the rounds before that,” added McAuley.

And McAuley says a few questions about Frampton were answered on Saturday night.

“Kiko can bang and he caught Carl a few times and they had little effect on him. That answered the question about his chin.

“He seems to be able to take a punch, so that is that box ticked.

“He had the fitness to go the 12 rounds if need be, which shows he has stamina, which is another box ticked.

“I thought he also proved that he has heart and that is another thing you need if you are going to go the whole way.

“These are all small things - but they are things you need if you are going to be a World Champion,” he added.
