Martin Lindsay accepts his fight against Lee Selby at the Odyssey Arena on February 9 is a ‘must win’ encounter.
Thirty-year-old Lindsay faces champion Selby for the Welsh man’s British and Commonwealth titles on the undercard of Carl Frampton’s European title clash against Kiko Martinez.
Lindsay held the British title in the past - but lost his crown to John Simpson at the King’s Hall in 2010.
Lindsay admits he has to deliver at the Odyssey against Selby.
“Yes, this is a must win fight, but they are all must win at this stage. I will be 31 in May, so I know victory is a must,” he said.
“When I lost my British title to Simpson, it has taken another 18 months to get to fight for it again. It is a must win fight, but they all are.
“We are going to the Odyssey to regain the British title.”
Lindsay has always been thought of as an outstanding prospect and he believes he will show everyone at the Odyssey that he still has the skill and ability that identified him as ‘one to watch’ when he turned professional.
“I believe on my day, if I box the way I know I can, I can beat anyone.
“It is up to me to turn-up at the Odyssey and perform. And if I do that I believe I will see off Selby. I have been waiting on fighting him since the summer, when I was named mandatory challenger for the belt, so I am ready for this fight,” he added.
And Lindsay - who trains at the Immacualata Gym in Belfast says they have studied Selby in the build-up to the fight.
“He is a slick counter puncher, who has power.
“I have noticed his strengths and his weaknesses and we have a gameplan ready for the Odyssey. This is going to be a tough fight, but I am confident I can get the job done.
“But we are working on my strengths and as I said ‘if I fight the way I know I can, I can beat anyone.’ Training and sparring is going really well and I will be ready come February 9.
“It is also great to be fighting in Belfast. To regain my British title in front of the fans would be out of this world. When you fight at home, you are more determined to win and you are totally focused on winning and not letting anyone down. It gives you an added incentive,” he added.
Also on the Odyssey bill Jamie Conlan will fight for the Commonwealth title, Martin Rogan will be in action, Andy Lee will face Anthony Fitzgerald and Eamonn O’Kane and Daniel ‘Insane’ McShane will also feature. Tickets can be purchased from fighters on the bill and at the Odyssey box office.
