The Rio Olympic Games are approaching fast and several of Ireland’s top stars will be in action in Dublin on Friday night as they face Team Russia.

The Russians are due to arrive on Thursday evening, in advance of a final training camp ahead of the Games.

And a record eight boxers qualified for the Rio Games and the night will also be an Olympic Going Away Celebration event at the National Stadium.

Local fighters Paddy Barnes, Brendan Irvine, Michael Conlan, Sean Mc Comb and Steven Donnelly will all showcase their talent against the Russians on the night.

John Joyce, Joe Ward, Jeffrey Kavanagh and Thomas Carthy will also feature.

And Conlan says he is going to Brazil this summer to get his hands on an Olympic gold medal.

“This is something I’ve dreamed of since I was a boy and to finally do it will be unbelievable.

“It will be tough but I am confident I can get the job done.

“And to have the support of a nation behind you and cheering you on is special.

“Just look how special it is when Manny Pacquaio fights, I’d love to be like that one day,” stated Conlan.

And Conlan says his preparation has gone very well and he fears no-one in his weight division in Rio.

“I don’t focus on any individual, I focus on myself and me performing as I know I can, that’s what wins me fights.”

“I think Irish sport has evolved so much in the last few years and we deserve to have the confidence we are showing.”

This will also be the last opportunity to watch the boxers before they head to the Rio Olympic Games.
