Paddy Barnes is targeting World and European domination this year and he believes Carl Frampton will do the same.
Barnes riding high on his bronze medal at last year’s Olympics in London will take part in the irish Senior Championships in Dublin at the start of February and he believes this will be a big year for Frampton and himself.
“Carl and I will both weigh-in on February 8. I am weighing in for the Irish Championsjips and he will be weighing in for his European title fight against Kiko Martinez.
“This year i want to win the Irish crown, defend my European title and then have a go at the Worlds. It is a big year for me and I am looking forward to it,” he added.
And has winning the bronze medal at the Olympics boosted his confidence?
“Yes it did, but I am a confident boy anyway. Winning bronze was great, but this a new year and new challenges lie ahead. I am looking to deliver again this year and keep pushing myself in the gym.
“Training for the Irish Championships is going well and I have been sparring great. it’s all systems go,” added Barnes. And what does Barnes think of Frampton’s chances of taking the European belt off Martinez?
“I think Cark will stop him in four to six rounds. Kiko is not a bad fighter but Carl is just better in every department. Carl is bigger than him, stronger, a better figher, a better boxer and i am sure Carl will be the first man to stop him.
“Carl is just faster and sharper. He’s just better and he will stop him. it looks like a hard fight on paper - but I think Carl will deal with him no problem,” he added.
Frampton has also wanted a fight with British champion Scott Quigg and Barnes says his money is on ‘The Jackal.’
“Quigg is a good fighter and he is improving with every fight - but he so one dimensional. Carl would just have too much for him. Frampton proved against Raul Hirales in Nottingham that he can box off the back-foot as well as being very good coming forward. Carl has a plan A and a plan B abd he would win that fight.
“To get Frampton versus Quigg on the Carl Froch versus Mikkel Kessler bill would be fantastic. I believe Carl will beat Martinez and go on and fight for a world title by the end of the year. The division he is in, is red hot and there are four quality World champions in that division, but Carl will still get the job done,” he added.
