Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome have confirmed that they will not be taking part in the upcoming for Giro d’Italia, which starts in Belfast on May 9.

It has been confirmed that both the Great Britain stars - who are part of the Team Sky set-up - will instead focus on different races.

Tour de France champion Froome has instead opted to prepare for his title defence, while Wiggins has chosen to go to America where he will enter the Tour of California in May.

Team Sky’s nine-man Giro squad includes Britons Ben Swift and Peter Kennaugh.

It comes as a further blow following last week’s news that British road race champion Mark Cavendish would also miss the Giro.

The Manxman, who rides for the Omega Pharma-Quick-Step team, will instead ride the tours of Turkey, California and Switzerland in preparation for the Tour de France.

Team Sky team for the 2014 Giro d’Italia: Edvald Boasson Hagen (Nor), Dario Cataldo (Ita), Philip Deignan (Ire), Bernhard Eisel (Aut), Sebastian Henao (Col), Pete Kennaugh (GB), Salvatore Puccio (Ita), Kanstantsin Siutsou (Blr), Ben Swift (GB)
