The Belfast Giants 5-2 Challenge Cup win over the Braehead Clan on Saturday night came at a cost with Jeffrey Szwez picking up a one game suspension which means he’ll miss the first of the two games against the Cardiff Devils at home this weekend.
What will annoy coach Paul Adey the most is that this was a meaningless game in terms of the Giants making the quarter-finals of the competition, which they’ve now achieved, and with Adam Keefe also missing Saturday night’s clash at the Odyssey Arena as he serves the final match of a four-game ban, the Giants will be missing most of their toughness going up against one of the most physical teams.
Both players will return to the line-up for Sunday afternoon’s encounter.
In the game at Braehead that became feistier as it went on, Szwez received a 2+2+game penalty for leaving the bench to get involved in an altercation with less than ten minutes remaining.
But upon review by the league this was upgraded to a match penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The incident marred a good win for the Giants which saw goals from Calvin Elfring, Evan Cheverie, Robby Sandrock, Craig Peacock and Kevin Saurette.
Scott Aarssen and Joel Champagne responded for the Clan.
