They have already written their own little chapter in the history of the tournament, but on Saturday Coleraine will look to add a further edition when they face rivals Ballymoney in the final of the IBA Senior Cup at Belmont (2pm).
It’s a unique confrontation. Only three Provincial clubs have had their name inscribed on the famous old trophy and Coleraine are one of them.
Amazingly, it’s only the second time since 1921 that two Provincial clubs will contest the final. Yes, Coleraine were involved 92 years ago when they defeated Ballymena.
They duly became the first Provincial side to get their hands on the trophy.
Since then, Magherafelt (in 1982) and Dunluce (2011) are the only other teams to have gleaned any success in the game’s top knockout tournament. But that is all about to change.
Ballymoney have without doubt been the most consistent team in this competition in recent years, having lost in the 2010 final to Ballymena and again last season to Dunbarton. There was also a semi final loss (to Dunluce) sandwiched in between.
They will look at this final as possibly their best opportunity to break their horrible duck.
In contrast, the Bannsiders have crept into the showcase event practically unnoticed and travel down the M2 looking to upset the odds.
“We are going there to enjoy the occasion,” said Coleraine’s Jordan Dallas. “It’s very much a unique occasion. We’ve come a long way since our maiden victory in 1921. It’s also been a long time since our second round win over Newcastle in this campaign. Now we are out to finish the job.
“But we are under no illusions about the task in front off us.”
