Instonians took a giant step towards reaching the semi-finals of the Lagan Valley Steel Twenty 20 Cup with a 10-wicket thrashing of CIYMS at Shawsbridge last night.
Neil Russell’s men dismissed the visitors for just 72 with professional Imad Wasim claiming three wickets, leaving the captain and Andrew White to knock off the runs in just 10.5 overs.
Seam bowler Nikolai Smith took the most important wicket of the night when he dismissed CI professional Rassie van der Dussen in just a second over of the match.
Things got a little better for CI with Nathan Waller falling for just 3 and Craig Boultwood top scoring with just 14.
All the Instonians bowlers made key contributions with Wasim taking three for 14, Stephen Bunting taking two for 4, Smith two for 13 and Zach Rushe one for 14.
That paltry total was never going to trouble a powerful Instonians top order and White quickly set about the CI bowling attack with relish. Russell was content to play the anchor role while White showed off a full range of strokes.
The Ireland International struck six fours and two sixes as Instonians cruised home with 9.1 overs to spare.
Inst have now won both of their group matches and have one foot in the last four.
CI, who won their opening group match against Ballymena, will probably now have to beat North Down to reach the semi finals.
At Shawsbridge: CIYMS 72, 20 overs (C Boultwood 14, I Wasim 3 for 14, S Bunting 2 for 4, N Smith 2 for 13). Instonians 75 for 0, 10.5 overs (A White 53 not out, N Russell 19 not out. Instonians win by 10 wickets.
