CRICKET: Irish to start title defence against Kenya

IRELAND will launch the defence of their Intercontinental Cup next week in the North West at Eglinton, taking on Kenya, whom they beat in 2005 to claim the first of their three wins in the competition.

The four-day game takes place from July 3-6, with play getting under way each day at 11am.

Clontarf will then host three One Day Internationals between the two countries, on July 9, 11 and 12. Action in those games starts at 10.45am.

These games will be known as the RSA Challenge Series, and announcing the fixtures, Philip Smith, Chief Executive of RSA, the official sponsor of Ireland's National cricket teams said: "As the official sponsor of Cricket Ireland, we are thrilled to strengthen our support of the game by launching the RSA Challenge Series.

"The competition provides world class cricket in Dublin for our talented team and no doubt it will help the team improve their standard of play.

"We are looking forward to their continued success and hopefully taking the Cup on home soil."

Ireland will select their squad for the games today, and it will be announced over the weekend.

Niall O'Brien is unavailable due to an ankle injury which is expected to see him out of action for up to six weeks.
