Dunbarton celebrate superb triple success in PGL Championships

Dunbarton defied the horrendous weekend weather conditions to haul in a hat-trick of trophies in the Private Greens League Championships at a wet Fruithill Park on Sunday.

The Gilford boys reconvened at the West Belfast venue to great effect after Saturday’s programme was completely wiped out due to the deluge of rain.

They began their charge by winning the fours in the morning session, with Myles Greenfield skipping his rink of Michael Higgins, Andy Hughes and DJ Wilson to a 21-14 victory over Paul McEwan’s Falls combination.

New Ireland international Conor McCartan and Wilson continued the theme in the afternoon by beating their club collagues, Ryan McElroy and Chris Mulholland (24-12) in the pairs final.

At the same time, Higgins, Tony Bell and Hughes edged out Paul Robinson’s Larne side in the triples decider, winning 18-13.

“It’s a fantastic achievement for the club,” said Greenfield.

“It’s the third year in a row that a Dunbarton rink has lifted the title.

“We’re taking over the mantle from Marty Trainor. In fact, it’s the fourth time in five years that the championship has landed at our club. Personally, it was my fourth success.

“Overall, it was a great day for Dunbarton with three PLG titles in the cabinet. We can now look forward to the Irish semi finals next month.”

Stephen Kirkwood completed the first of a possible double success by beating Pickie’s Ryan Cavan in a thrilling Youth singles semi finals.

The Old Bleach player nicked a single on the last end to edge home 21-20.

Kirkwood, who joined the Randalstown club from Hilden at the start of the season, will now face Ballymena’s Stephen Shields in the final of the Under-25 singles on Thursday night.

At the same time, Mark McPeak will attempt to get his hands on the PGL singles title when he faces Ballymena’s Andy Morrison.

Meanwhile, following the weekend washout, the NIBA Championships will tonight resume at Shaftesbury Park, Carrickfergus.

Neil Mulholland, fresh from his silver medal success at the Commonwealth Games, faces Castle’s Matt Stevenson in the singles semi final with a spot in the decider against Whitehead’s Nigel Beggs up for grabs.

Mulholland will be back in action on Thursday night, along with Ivan Craig for a pairs semi final showdown against Trevor Carson and Matthew Crawford of Bangor.

At the same time, Mulholland’s Commonwealth team mate, Marty McHugh will also feature in the pairs along with Barry Browne. The title holders will line out against Lisnagarvey’s Scott Jess and Martin Nelson.
