FOOTBALL: Big Two ready for cup battle
BIG Two managers David Jeffrey and Scott Young believe there will be no need for incentives when Linfield and Glentoran clash at The Oval.
The pressure has been cranked up in the build-up to their JJB Sports Irish Cup quarter-final showdown on Mersey Street following the resignation of Alan McDonald last weekend.
Former Glens coach Young has stepped into the breach for the remainder of the season - at least - with today's cup showdown the first test of his managerial career.
"It's a baptism of fire, but one that I am relishing," Young said ahead of Saturday's big game.
"We have worked hard this week in training, concentrating on different things.
"But motivation will not be an issue. As a player, if you can't get up for such a cup tie, you shouldn't be in the game.
"I'll be making it clear to the players what this game means to the fans and the people of east Belfast."
Blues counterpart Jeffrey added: "Scott Young will be out to make an impression, no doubt about it. He will see himself as a candidate for the manager's post on a full-time basis. Also Pete Batey and Tim McCann being there, they are Glen men through and through.
"If you put all that in one big pot, then that is one massive motivational factor. It is a ginormous motivational factor."
Meanwhile today's scheduled sixth round tie between Loughgall and Newry City has been postponed.
The IFA yesterday pulled the plug on the delayed clash after Larne lodged an appeal against the decision to allow Newry to progress in the competition.
Newry were this week awarded a 2-1 victory over Larne following an Executive Committee meeting on Monday - that was the scoreline when their fifth round tie was abandoned on January 16 following a mass brawl between both sets of players.
Loughgall manager Niall Currie - whose side will now play Ballinamallard in the Championship - yesterday voiced his anger at the IFA, labelling the ongoing saga as "farcical".
