FOOTBALL: Glens forge ahead at top
GLENTORAN boss Scott Young insists his players won't be getting carried away with their blistering start to the season.
Last night's 2-0 win over Cliftonville saw the Glens retain the top spot in the Carling Premiership.
The Oval club are now the only unbeaten team in the top flight following their stellar start.
First half goals from Neal Gawley and Daryl Fordyce sealed last night's win on Mersey Street.
Gawley broke the deadlock in the 18th minute with Fordyce doubling the advantage on the half-hour mark.
For boss Young, it was another step in the right direction for his new-look squad.
"We knew this would be a massive game for us because Cliftonville had started the season in good fashion," he said.
"If they had won they would have gone above us and also had a game in hand, so there might have been some daylight there.
"So I have to be delighted with the performance and result, because it is another clean sheet for us – our fourth on the bounce.
"But it is still early days, and we won't be getting carried away with things. It is a good start but that's all."
Cliftonville manager Eddie Patterson admitted clinical finishing was the difference on the night.
"Glentoran took their chances and we didn't," he said.
"We created some chances but couldn't convert them.
"It is disappointing but it is still early days in the season. There is a long way to go."
n Cliftonville last night confirmed the signing of Barry Johnston from Glenavon.
The former Reds midfielder, had a spell with Shamrock Rovers in the League of Ireland, before moving to Mourneview Park.
