FOOTBALL: Hamilton strike saves Glens
GARY Hamilton hailed the character of Glentoran after helping the champions return to the top of the Carling Premiership.
Hamilton scored an 88th-minute equaliser to deny the Blues at The Oval, a result that sees Alan McDonald's champions leapfrog Crusaders at the summit.
Linfield looked on course for victory after an own goal from Sean Ward and Jamie Tomelty's 55th-minute strike had cancelled out Daryl Fordyce's opener.
But Hamilton provided the late heroics to claim a vital point on Mersey Street.
"I think we showed we have the fight and character in the team," he said.
"We were on the verge of losing tonight but we showed some bottle to bounce back. Teams who score late goals usually end up being in the title reckoning come the end of the season.
"Manchester United do it, and thankfully we have done it here tonight."
Linfield boss David Jeffrey aired his disappointment at Hamilton's late equaliser, but admitted he was encouraged by the performance of his under pressure Blues.
"It is frustrating and disappointing to concede so late because I thought in the second half we were outstanding," he said.
"I thought we had done enough but we hadn't. But I am extremely pleased with the performance and the players deserve a lot of credit."
Meanwhile Jeffrey last night reiterated his desire to remain at the Linfield helm.
"Some of the reports in the press have been rubbish. I have never tendered my resignation," he blasted.
"Whether I stay here is for other people at the club to decide. I will just get on with picking the team."
