FOOTBALL: McDonald 'looking forward' to final
ALAN McDonald declared 'bring it on' after guiding Glentoran to the final of the Co-operative Insurance Cup.
Andy Waterworth's first half goal was enough to inflict a 1-0 defeat on Portadown at Windsor Park.
The Glens will now meet either Coleraine or Dungannon Swifts in the March 27 Co-op showpiece, and McDonald admits he doesn't mind who they come up against.
"It doesn't bother me who we meet in the final. We are there and we can now mark that date in our calendar," he said.
"Coleraine and Dungannon are two good footballing sides and it will be tough no matter who we get.
"But the main thing was that Glentoran progressed to the final and tonight we did that."
McDonald admitted his relief at claiming a semi-final victory over the Ports.
"Gary Hamilton was telling me the last three times we have played Portadown in a semi they have beaten us. So we wanted to change that statistic," he added.
"They are always tight affairs between the clubs and tonight was no different.
"We were gutted to lose to Portadown in the semi-finals last season, so it is nice to get the win tonight. Now we can look forward to a final."
And McDonald praised match-winner Waterworth after his 20th-minute strike.
"I thought Andy was a constant thorn in their side. He was making good runs off the ball and got his chance," he added.
"He had a bit to do but we have been telling the strikers to have a pop when they can, and thankfully Andy did that and his shot went in. If you shoot then you have a chance of scoring."
