Warrenpoint Town 0 Ards 2
Ards produced a battling performance to come away with a vital three points at Stangmore Park as two second half goals saw them close the gap on Warrenpoint to just five points at the foot of the table.
Mark Burns and William Faulkner were the men who did the damage for the North Down men who were fully deserving of their victory against a dreadful ‘Point side.
The first half was full of effort but devoid of any real quality as the opening 45 minutes epitomised just why these sides occupy the bottom two in the Premiership.
The first real action arrived on 14 minutes when a long ball over the top with the strong wind, was flicked on by Ards’ Andy Mitchell and as Sean Cleary picked it up just outside the penalty area, he appeared to be taken down by Warrenpoint’s Stephen Moan. Referee Danny Colton looked to his assistant on that side for advice but he was unmoved and play continued when Moan could well have been penalised.
The game sprang to life just 60 seconds after the restart when the visitors took the lead from a corner. Craig McMillen whipped the set-piece in from the left and left-back Mark Burns found himself all along eight yards out to power a bullet header past a helpless Jonny Parr.
It took the hosts until the 63rd minute to create their first clear-cut chance of the match when Liam Bagnall found himself 18 yards out and he opted to square the ball to Ruairi Devlin in space, but the winger’s effort was weak and easily held by Alan Blayney.
However, it was Ards who got the second goal they deserved and one that secured all three points with 12 minutes remaining.
Conor Downey whipped the ball in from the left, Mitchell’s powerful header was clawed away superbly by Parr but William Faulkner was on hand to force home the rebound.
