Ballymena United squeezed past the challenge of Harland & Wolff Welders to book a sixth round spot in the Irish Cup.

Gary Thompson scored the decisive goal with 15 minutes left to see off the plucky Championship side.

Earlier, United defender Mark McCullagh’s header from an Alan Teggart crossbar came back off the bar.

Ballymena eventually broke the deadlock on 75 minutes when Thompson played a neat one-two with Michael McLellan before slotting past keeper Lee Windrum.
