Wigan Athletic striker Grigg – star of the viral chant ‘Will Grigg’s on fire’– came off the bench to claim the final goal in a 3-0 win over Belarus.

The home supporters had been singing his song for most of the match – even when Grigg was sat on the bench waiting for his big chance.

Now the popular adaptation will be starring in France after Grigg was included in Michael O’Neill’s 23-man squad for the Euros.

“All the boys wanted him to score from the minute he came on the pitch,” Washington said.

“The song’s been crazy, it’s been everywhere. You can’t stop singing it and after the season he’s had, he deserved that goal. I’m buzzing for him.

“There’s great quality throughout the team and it’s a really good team to play in.”

Washington also got on the scoresheet to preserve his 100 per cent record in a Northern Ireland shirt.

Two games, two goals is an impressive start for Northern Ireland’s latest arrival.

The QPR striker scored on his debut against Slovenia in March and doubled up on Friday against Belarus.

“It was nice to get another goal on Friday, but it was even better that we got a really good win,” Washington added.

“It was another good performance. My goal was one of those I probably don’t score enough of, inside the six-yard box. They mean the most.”

Washington now hopes to feature prominently in manager O’Neill’s plans in France this summer.

“Whoever plays up front in a 3-5-2, the manager wants them to get down the sides and test the centre-halves,” he added.

“Luckily for me, that’s exactly how I want to play. I love getting down the sides of defenders and stretching teams.”
