Deaf footballers pick up silverware in Liverpool

Belfast Deaf United's Under-16s are still on cloud nine after winning a major national tournament.

They were among seven teams to take part in the finals of the National Deaf Children’sSociety’s youth football tournament (Northern section) in Liverpool.

They initially took part in a league – they were up against Braidwood, Cardiff City, Derby Deaf Young FC and Glasgow Youth A, B and C teams – and then defeated Derby 3-1 in a close and competitive final.

Alan Crooks, the Irish FA’s Disability Manager, said: “The players and the coaching staff at Belfast Deaf United have been excellent, working hard at training on Friday evenings.

The future of the club is in good hands with plenty of young players coming through the ranks.”

Alan added: “There are football opportunities for males and females of all ages in deaf football, from participation sessions to pulling on the famous green jersey for Northern Ireland.”
