FOYLE CUP: Competition hots up as semi final places sealed on key day

The third day of the Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup saw one of the most important days of the week bar the finals as group matches came to a close in all competitions, except the under 14 and under 16 sections.

In the under 13 section, Oxford, Oliver Plunkett, Maiden City Soccer and Donegal School Boys all qualified for the semi-final of the Foyle Cup by virtue of securing three consecutive victories. Choosing a winner will prove to be a difficult decision.

The large attendances at the mini soccer tournament continued across all the venues as family members in huge numbers were encouraging the younger players at underage to display their skills.

Oxford’s 2-0 victory over Oliver Plunkett put them top of their group as they reached the semi-finals of the under 13 section of the Hughes Insurance Cup.

Oxford’s group campaign started with fantastic wins over Ballymoney and Crusaders. Some excellent football was played at St Columb’s Park, enthralling the large attendance that included the deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness.

Jack Morrow crossed the ball into the danger area and Mark McDaid applied the finish from close in. Deep into the second half and Shea Ferguson headed in the second from an Ethan O’Kane corner.

Letterkenny Rovers faced Irish League side Coleraine at Prehen and played out a very sporting 1-1 draw. The Bannsiders grabbed the lead in the 20th minute. A long ball out of defence was latched onto by Stuart Wallace and his shot found the net after a goalkeeping error.

Letterkenny drew level after the break with a beautiful right foot strike from Marty Duffy.
