Healy boosted by signing of former team-mate Carroll

The Blues confirmed on Tuesday the signing of the 38-year-old goalkeeper on a 12-month contract.

Carroll is currently on international duty with Northern Ireland, with the former Manchester United star a certainty to be named in Michael O’Neill’s Euro 2016 squad which will be revealed on Saturday.

Carroll played for the Red Devils between 2001 and 2005, and also enjoyed spells with the likes of Wigan, West Ham, Derby and Olympiacos.

He has spent the past two seasons with Notts County but is now ready to return to Northern Ireland to play for Linfield – managed by former international team-mate and record goalscorer Healy.

“I’m delighted to be able to advise our supporters that Roy Carroll has signed a one year deal as a player to take effect from June 1,” Healy told Linfield’s official website.

“He’s obviously a player I know very well and he will bring with him considerable experience which will be of enormous benefit to the goalkeepers in our squad and indeed our entire squad.

Carroll played in five of his country’s Euro qualifiers, helping Northern Ireland qualify for their first major tournament in 30 years.

“I’m looking forward to working with him once his international commitments are concluded in the coming weeks,” Healy added.

Meanwhile, Portadown have accepted Chris Casement’s request to be placed on the transfer list.

Casement – who has two years left on his contract – is believed to be a target of former club Linfield .

“We received a transfer request from Chris via letter but wanted to talk to the player before moving forward,” said Portadown director Ronnie Stinson.

“We held talks and asked Chris to go away and think about everything before making a final decision.

“He told us on Monday he wanted to leave and it is the decision of manager Pat McGibbon and the Board of Directors to accept that transfer request. Chris still has two years left on his contract but we are now open to offers for the player.”
