Michael O’Neill’s side discovered a new-found resilience during the Euro 2016 qualifiers,a mental toughness that will be tested by Poland, Ukraine and Germany at this summer’s finals in France.

But after topping their qualifying group, and emerging unscathed from the recent friendlies against Wales and Slovenia, versatile forward Ward believes the future is bright for the men in green.

“The most important thing is we’ve come out of the Wales and Slovenia games without any losses and we’ve set that new record,” the Nottingham Forest star said.

“We’d love to extend that record and make it even longer. In the previous World Cup qualifying campaign we couldn’t buy a win but Michael and the boys have really turned it around.

“As people can see, we’re prepared to run through brick walls for each other, and you know that if you blow up and you have to come off there is someone waiting who can do a job to replace you.

“Michael has worked hard to put a plan in place, and everything is coming together.

Now we can look forward to this summer.”
