Lafferty – who had been tipped to join Wednesday’s Yorkshire rivals Leeds United in January – is wanted by the Owls.

Leeds boss Steve Evans faces a fight to lure the Northern Ireland striker to Elland Road before the loan window closes on Thursday.

Birmingham are also chasing Lafferty, who cost Norwich £3.4million from Italian outfit Palermo two years ago.

Lafferty’s Canaries contract runs out in June next year – the 28-year-old Northern Ireland hitman has made only 23 appearances for the Canaries, with just three of them coming this season.

The former Burnley and Rangers striker will be keen to secure regular first-team football ahead of this summer’s Euro Championship finals in France.

Lafferty was a pivotal part of Northern Ireland’s qualifying campaign, with his seven goals helping Michael O’Neill’s men finish top of their group.

Northern Ireland will play Poland, Ukraine and Germany in the Euros, and O’Neill will be keen to have a fit and focused Lafferty at his disposal.

Speaking recently, O’Neill said he hoped the player could sort out his club future.

“The most important thing is he gets game time between now and the finals. He needs to be active so hopefully something can be done,” O’Neill said.
