Queen’s University booked their place in the sixth round of the Irish Cup with a narrow 1-0 win over Limavady United.
Limavady defender Rory Hassan was the fall guy as his cruel own goal settled matters at the Dub.
Limavady’s Jason Blackwood had the first chance shooting wildly wide from the right side of the box after 10 minutes and soon after, for Queen’s, Michael Allison’s run and cross from the right wing found the head of Aaron Thompson who headed narrowly wide from six yards.
Queen’s had another half chance when the dangerous James Lavery spun 8 yards out and shot across goal but just past the far post.
After the break the pace of the game picked up and on a quick Queen’s breakaway midfield man Kevin Hagan sent Michael Allison on a run but the speedy winger’s 25 yard shot flashed narrowly wide with McGraw beaten.
With 15 minutes to go and just when it looked like a replay in Limavady would be needed, Queen’s sub Mark Prenter beat two men in the box and played the ball across the face of the goal where the unfortunate Limavady left back Hassan turned the ball into his own net for what proved to be the decisive goal.
