Tipton submits Ports application

Tipton, who is currently on the books at Ballymena United as a striker, this week registered an application.

“It was flattering to be linked to the job and a move into management is something I have considered,” said Tipton. “I have been taking training sessions at Ballymena following Glenn Ferguson’s departure and this week following David Jeffrey’s appointment as manager.

“I have really enjoyed that responsibility and it made up my mind to submit an application for the Portadown job.”

Portadown officials this week moved forward with the process of appointing Ronnie McFall’s long-term successor by advertising the position.

Pat McGibbon, the former Northern Ireland international defender and current club physio, was promoted to the post of interim boss until the end of the season.

McGibbon is expected to lodge formal interest in the permanent position with an official application before the March 27 deadline.

He will, however, hold the role of manager for the final fixtures in a league programme which demands a drastic upturn in form or risk of a relegation battle.

Trevor Williamson, who was first-team coach for McFall, will serve under McGibbon in an increased role - with club captain Keith O’Hara and senior player David Miskelly invited to play a part in training.

It is understood that the Board of Directors felt the appointment of McGibbon to the summer alongside an open invitation for outside interest would provide internal stability on the pitch but an opportunity off the field for clear forward progress towards a long-term solution.

McFall and his assistant, Kieran Harding, resigned in the aftermath of last weekend’s Irish Cup defeat to second-tier Lurgan Celtic.

Sources have confirmed early interest in the vacancy from candidates domestic and based across the water.
