In a week when the subject of the proposed sponsorship of Ibrox stadium has received more column inches than team matters as far as Rangers are concerned, Ally McCoist switched his attention to Chief Executive Charles Green.

After originally stating he would be at Ibrox no longer than 12 months, Green is now talking about staying at the club until possible retirement at the age of 70 having managed a remarkable turnaround in popularity amongst the loyal Rangers fans.

And McCoist respects Green’s commitment to the Scottish club as Rangers strives to return to the top division.

“He has pledged his future to the club because he believes there’s a lot of work to be done, like the rest of us, and we want to get that work done and get back to the top of domestic football and then challenging in Europe,” said McCoist,
“He was very up front and honest and said he’d only be here for a short period of time. He said he wanted to get the club back on an even keel and moving forward again.

“It looks from where I’m sitting that he now fully appreciates the size of the club, the people within the club and the support and he’s enjoyed being part of it.”

To the surprise of many, Green secured agreement to the proposed renaming at a midweek meeting with supporters’ representatives – subject to the name of Ibrox being retained and an acceptable sponsor secured. The reality for most of course is that financial needs must – and with Green admitting that the club remains trading at a loss principally because there have been no staff cutbacks there is a clear recognition that every potential investor is essential.

Meanwhile, Rangers play host to Montrose on Saturday afternoon with three points at stake.

Lee McCulloch remains an injury absentee as does striker Kevin Kyle – meaning that Fran Sandaza, who scored the winning goal at Peterhead last weekend, will almost certainly partner Dean Shiels up front.

The Spanish striker is quickly becoming a favourite with ’Gers fans principally due to his skill and endeavour and will be keen to add to his two-goal tally for the season.
