Ballymena United boss Glenn Ferguson believes his team’s impressive start to the new Danske Premiership campaign will be scrutinised by Portadown at the Showgrounds on Saturday.

The Sky Blues have stormed from the traps, reeling in four points from their two opening matches and Ferguson is determined to maintain the trend.

”This will be a big test,” he said, buoyed by his side’s impressive 2-2 result against Crusaders at Seaview in midweek.

“Ronnie McFall did well over the summer in terms of strengthening his squad, signing Robbie Garrett, Mark McAllister and Michael Gault from Linfield.

“They have two of the most prolific front men in the league, in Gary Twigg and Darren Murray, so we’ll have our work cut out. We must stay switched on for the 90 minutes against guys like that.

“If we stick to our game plan, we should be ok. We’ll be up for it. We coped well against a big strong physical side in the form of Crusaders, so we must now do the same on Saturday.”

Ferguson admitted he was a tinge disappointed with the result at Seaview, but would have taken a draw had been offered at the start.

“Yes, it’s always a difficult venue to visit,” he added. “But when Johnny Taylor headed us in front with only eight minutes left, we really should have seen it out.,

“However, we managed to hold the advantage for a couple of minutes and that was disappointing.”
