Ballymena United boss Ferguson insists his players will battle

Ballymena United manager Glenn Ferguson insists an Irish Cup final semi final appearance will not derail his team’s ambitions of picking up Premiership points over the remaining six games.

United, who face Queen’s University in the cup showdown, on Saturday will roll out the welcome mat for in-form Glenavon, who last weekend clinched their spot in the Premiership’s top six.

Ferguson warned that no one’s place is secure after a recent horrible showing against Glentoran and, even though his team responded in a positive manner at Crusaders last week, he is looking for even more improvement tomorrow.

“I am not going to let these guys go through the motions, knowing there is a cup semi final up ahead,” he said.

“I questioned the players after the Glentoran match. I asked for a response. They were much better at Seaview.

“There was commitment, passion and desire . . . none of those attributes were on show in the previous game. Crusaders are a top team in this league and have been for some time, so there were a lot of positives to take from the game.

“But that type of performance has to be maintained for every game, starting with Glenavon.

“We set out earlier this season and a top six place was on our agenda.

“We are disappointed not to have achieved that.

“But we still want to reel in as many points as possible before we start to focus on that cup semi final. Our season is far from over,” added Ferguson
